Places to visit near Murudeshwar

Murudeshwar is a small town in Karnataka and lies on the coast of Arabian Sea. This place is famous for the Shiva Temple having world’s second largest Shiva’s Statue.

A 20 storied monumental tower, known as Gopuram, is built on top of the temple.The tower is installed with a lift inside which gives a breath taking aerial view of the Shiva statue.

This post is to enlighten the things to do apart from visiting temple and beach ( which most of you people have done )

Lets cover all the places within 30 KM from Murudeshwar:

1. Bhatkal Light House:

A must visit place in Bhatkal. One will love the view from the hilltop. Down there you see a river meeting the sea, kodachadri hills in other side, beautiful beach and endless waves in front. Amazing!!! There is also a temple next to light house. This place is around 4 KM from Bhatkal Circle and around 16 KM from Murudeshwar.

2. Kadavinakatta Dam

Kadavinakatta Dam is constructed across the river Venkatapur. This is a wonderful destination to visit throughout the year. The rainy season fills up the dam and provides a mesmerizing view to the tourists. There is a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga next to the dam. This place is located 2 KM from Bhatkal circle.

3. Idagunji Maha Ganapathi Temple:

Idagunji is famous for its Ganapathi Temple. It is an ancient temple, with a history dating back 1500 years. Idagunji is 19 KM away from Murudeshwar.

4. Apsarakonda Waterfalls

Apsarakonda is one of the scenic tourist places near Murudeshwar. The water cascades down from a height of 10 meters into a pond below. Just few mins walk from the falls is a magnificent hill which has a viewpoint. The hill and beach offer a beautiful view of sunset. Apsarkonda is 20 KM away from Murudeshwar.

You can also pay a visit to Eco Beach Park, Kasarkod. Its near to Apsarkonda.

5. Basavaraj Durga Island:

Basavaraja Durga Island is an island in the Arabian Sea. Basavaraja Durga Island is situated about 3 kms from Honnavar and around 30KM from Murudeshwara. Basavaraja Durga Island is famous for its historical Island fort, built during the regime of Shivappa Nayaka, king of Keladi dynasty. The top of the island is a plateau covered with dry grass and trees. The island has number of fresh water wells. There is a temple constructed between the 16th and 17th century.

6 Netrani Island:

This place located 18 KM from Murudeshwar beach. This island attracts tourists due to scuba-diving. Netrani is one of the best place to explore life under water. There are many agencies run scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing. Water is crystal clear and you can even see fishes from the boat.

Getting to Netrani Island Murudeshwara, India :

To do the scuba diving you need to reach Murudeshwara, you can reach Murudeshwara from Goa, Gokarna, Mangalore, Bangalore.  From these destinations there are regular buses to Murudeshwara. Mangalore and Goa are closest airport to Murudeshwara and they are connected through railway. Netrani Isaland is located 19 KM from Murudeshwar Beach and you can reach Island through Boat and it takes around 45 minutes to reach the destination.

Goa to Mangalore is coastal of Karnataka. It lies on NH 66 and travelling is much easy and enjoyable along the coast. The journey starts as you exit from Goa towards Karnataka. The first place you visit is Karwar.

 

Karwar :

The pristine clear beaches with their golden sands, the gently swaying coconut trees, the tropical and picturesque forests surrounded with hills and the sea, make Karwar a perfect Tourist destination. Karwar offers a lot of water sports.

Gokarna is a small town in Karnataka, primarily known for two reasons – its beaches and temples. Gokarna can be different things to different people. Its around 60 KM from Karwar.
Must visit places are Om Beach, Half Moon Beach, Kudle Beach, Mahabaleswara Temple.

 

Enjoy the beautiful sunset and activities in any Gokarna beach and stay in Gokarna.

Yana : 


 Yana is located in around 45 KM from Gokarna. Yana is a village located amidst thick forests known for the unusual rock formations. To reach the main site of the rocks, you have to trek up a narrow trail about 1.5 kms long from the nearest road head. Once you reach the site and face the twin rocks, the feeling is magical as if you are in fantasy world. You have to be there to feel it. It is an amazing place with two huge rocks in the centre of the forest.

Jog Falls:
Joga Falls is the second highest plunge waterfall in India. Best time to enjoy the waterfalls is during monsoon. It is a segmented waterfall which, depending on rain and season, becomes a plunge waterfall. The falls are a major tourist attraction and is ranked 13th in the world by the waterfall database.

Honnavar :

Udupi :

Udupi is considered as the final resting place of Lord Krishna. Sri Krishna Temple and matha was set up in the 13th century by Madhvacharya. Legend has it that once Kanakadasa, a worshipper of Lord Krishna was denied entrance into the temple. Determined to see god, Kanakadasa kept praying hard from the outside itself. Impressed by his devotion, it is believed that Lord Krishna’s idol turned to face Kanakadasa and a small hole formed on the wall so that Kanakadasa can get a glimpse of Lord Krishna. This spot is now known as Kanakana kindi (window of Kanaka).

Udupi’s St. Mary’s Island, located at a distance of just over six kilometres from the Malpe Beach, has always been one of the major tourist attractions.

St Mary’s Island, Malpe is another very popular tourist attraction around Udupi and Mangalore. Located off the coast, St Mary’s island can be reached by ferry service operated from Malpe harbour. Ferry service opens at about 9 am and closes at 5 pm and per person fee is Rs 100.

Mangalore :

Mangalore is a beautiful tourist place which lies between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. Major attractions in Mangalore tourism are the beautiful beaches, temples, churches and mosques. The Mangalore has plenty of popular tourist places to visit. Shopping, outing, nightlife etc in Mangalore city is really beautiful.

Roadtrip from Bangalore to Dandeli-Karwar-Gokarna-Yana-Joga-Murudeshwar

Welcome to this Blog on Roadtrip to Uttar Kannada district, a small initiative to provide a clear picture about Uttara Kannada district as a tourist place.

Let us begin the journey!

Start journey from Bangalore to Dandeli : Distance 463 KM via National Highway 48. Leave Bangalore at night and reach Dandeli by morning. 

Dandeli :

Dandeli has been widely acclaimed for its natural beauty and the lush green jungles. 

The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, with its trails and dense forests. Its also home to animals including black panthers, monkeys and elephants, as well as many bird species. A temple stands at the entrance to the limestone Kavala Caves, known for their stalagmite formations. West of the caves, Anshi National Park encompasses the Kali Tiger Reserve.

Located within 3 KM from Dandeli. 

Some other places to visit in Dandeli are Supa Dam and Kavala Caves. Stay over night in Dandeli and leave to Karwar next morning.

Karwar :


Karwar, a coastal town of Karnataka adjoining Goa is a tranquil heaven for the nature lovers. This town is sandwiched between the Arabian Sea on one side and Western Ghats on the other. The pristine clear beaches with their golden sands, the gently swaying coconut trees, the tropical and picturesque forests surrounded with hills and the sea, make Karwar a perfect Tourist destination.

Karwar is located around 100 KM from Dandeli.

Have lunch in Karwar, you’ll find many seafood restaurants here. After lunch head towards Gokarna. 

 

Gokarna :

Welcome to Murudeshwar, a town which is a perfect blend of spirituality and picturesque beauty. Located in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, Murudeshwar is well known for the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Right from the divinity of the place and the spectacular entrance arch, Murudeshwar captivates the pilgrims. 

Every tourist has bundle of questions when he/she visits a place. This is small initiative to answer most question that arise in tourist mind when they visit Murudeshwar.

There are daily buses from Bangalore, Mysore, Goa, Mangalore. 

Konkan railway connects Mumbai, Goa and Kerala through Murudeshwar. 

Near by Airport is Mangalore Airport. 

Police Station:

Located near to center in Murudeshwar. 

Breakfast in Murudeshwar :

You can get variety of breakfast in Murudeshwar like Dosa, Idly Vada, Poori bhaji, Chapathi etc. 

There are few local foods like Buns, Misal bhaji etc. One can try this to taste the local flavor.

Its hard to find English breakfast in Murudeshwar. You might get it in one or two restaurants.

Lunch and Dinner :

You’ll get Seafood, Chicken and Mutton dishes. 

You’ll not get pork and Beef in Murudeshwar restaurants. 

Wine shop:

There are 4 to 5 wine shops in Murudeshwar. You can also buy from MSIL shop located in center of Murudeshwar.

Murudeshwar : Seafood destination

Murudeshwar is a tourist place with largest Shiva statue and temple. Its also a destination for seafood lovers.


Here is the list of fishes you should try when you are in Murudeshwara.


1. Mackerel/Bangda :

Bangda is easily available in all the seafood restaurants in Murudeshwar and in coastal Karnataka. There are number of dishes in Bangda, however one must try Bangda rava fry. Few other tasty dishes are Bangda Masala Fry, Bangda Tawa Fry and Bangda Curry.


2. Pompret/Paplet : 

Pompret will be available in limited restaurants. Pompret Masala fry is a must try.


3. King Fish / Surmai :

Being known as the King fish, it is indeed king in taste. One must try tawa fry in King fish.

4. Prawns : 

You can find variety of prawns in restaurants, prawns ghee roast is a must try. You should also try prawn masala fry, prawn chilli, Prawns tawa fry etc.


5.  Crab :

Crab masala is a must try. Crab is difficult to eat for the first time. There are variety of crabs, few are hard shell and few come with soft shell.


6. Squid/Bondas :


Squid pepper masala is a must try.

 7. Shellfish/Marwai :

Marwai sukka is a must try in and around Murudeshwara.


8. Ladyfish/Kane:

In Ladyfish rava fry and even masala fry is a must try.


9. Silver Fish : 

Silver fish is small is size and silver masala fry is a must try.


These are my suggestions for people who visit Murudeshwara or coastal Karnataka and want to try seafood. Please be cautious that fish has bones and enjoy delicious coastal curries and seafood dishes.
